Crampology
Dr. Hans Katzberg has been dedicated to the study of motor nerve hyper-excitability and muscle cramps across the spectrum of health and disease states. He has studied this phenomenon in patients with a variety of medical and neurological conditions including ALS and polyneuropathy and was lead on the American Academy of Neurology Guideline on Management of Muscle Cramps and participant in multiple Cochrane Systematic Reviews on treatment options for cramps. His numerous research articles, book chapters, and reviews delve into pathophysiology, clinical cases, outcome measures, and treatment-related issues.
Why crampology? Muscle cramps are the quintessential neuromuscular phenomenon, with complex, inter-related pathophysiology, a nerve or muscle primary origin and unique electrodiagnostic signature. Dr. Katzberg’s efforts to improve the health of patients with muscle cramps has included evaluation of novel agents and technologies for treatment and the development of a patient-centred, validated clinical outcome measure, the Muscle Cramp Impact Index (MCII). This tool allows for comprehensive assessment of muscle cramps, moving beyond traditional measures of frequency and severity.
